How much food can I produce on a city home lot in the next five years?
What if half the people that had lots converted 10% of their lot to food production?
What would it mean for Health? Economy? Family? Community?
As a health coach, I have been grinding on these questions for years. So, after dreaming about it, I decided to roll out a long term experiment.
Now, I finally got around to documenting some of the work here on film and photo.
I’ve been documenting most everything in a journal for yearly review, but am really excited to share this endeavor with you via media channels.

First, I hope to get feedback from all of you experienced permaculture, gardener, farmer, soil builder, types.
Second, I want to inspire more people to build health from the ground up. Literally.
The most profound health supportive activity is gardening. I am so serious. After coaching hundreds, or maybe thousands now (?), of people on health and nutrition, I have come to the slightly disturbing and clear reflection that most people could have a richer, fuller healthier life with a small garden.
I guess that is not so surprising. But it is a whole new way to work with someone. I don’t know how to help more people have this lifestyle. This is my way to begin to learn about how to teach others, while I learn too!
City Homesteading Fits Perfectly with HomeSchool!
I will be posting a movie over the next couple days. It is taking my MacBook a long time to complete the edits ( I need more memory). The PowerBook remains free though, so I can get these uploaded now.
Anyway…
I love teaching our girls. That is a major WIN for us too. Kids love to grow things. They are helping to start seeds. The witness the germination. They see the seeds turn into sprouts, then full bloom plants.
They know the basics of compost, how to use tools safely and they spend time outdoors with mom and dad.

You see, it is an Integral Health practice. If you take Integral Life Practice and apply it to the way we hold our City Homesteading project, you really see a multi-dimensional growth practice par excellence!~ Physical. Mental. Subtle Body. Community. Culture. Family. Nature. It is exquisite.
I first presented gardening as a quintessential Integral health and nutrition practice at an Integral Institute meeting back in 2008. The seeds were planted long ago (puns).
Since my parents were really into “back to nature” and “Whole earth Catalogs,” I grew up with a half acre garden, fruit trees, chickens, and what is now known as “permaculture.”
Of course, I want to support you in living a great life too. I’ve learned that greatness does not lie in perfection, it lies in forgiveness, compassion, commitment, persistence and humility.

Integrative Nutrition + Metabolic Typing = the missing link in the Integral Life Practice Nutrition module. “each level of the body is autonomous yet an integral part of a greater whole…Stressors/causal factors of disease can manifest on any level…influencing one, several or all other levels…Critically, nutrients behave differently on different levels in the body in their acidifying/alkalinizing influences…furthermore, if the problem’s causal level is other than that being treated, the effect will be minimal and temporary…realize the limits of nutrition…on the other hand, virtually every health problem can benefit by proper nutrition.”
-Dr. William Walcott, founder of Metabolic Typing
Integrative Nutrition addresses all the major theories and contextualizes the need for breadth.
Metabolic Typing goes deep into the clinical testing of nutrition, answering the question, “what really works?”
Without a doubt, the ILP kit and the Integral Life Practice book need to be complimented by this knowledge. All parties agree.
Basically, they are a bunch of foodies, that are geeked out on health and nutrition and want to share all the cool stuff that they have learned with other people. They get massive results because they have learned the fundamentals of success.
How do they help people?
Health counselors, in this case, graduates from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, are really success counselors. The only way to change habits like diet and lifestyle is to use the great success principles of the ages. Some have used these in business, others in relationships. Health counselors then are organized around health, but are applying the fundamental principles of success.
What are the principles that successful health counselors use?
Goal setting – How to set and reach goals
Emotional Fitness – How to relate to, work with and direct emotional health
Self Love – What do people with high self-esteem do?
Persistence – They teach clients how to keep going when they fail
Faith – How do you cultivate belief that you can succeed?
Balance – This is the root of health
Support – All successful people in any endeavor get support
Action – Consistently, Constantly, moving forward
Accountability – The client is firmly but lovingly held accountable
You can see that a big part of health counseling has nothing to do with nutrition or exercise, even though those are fundamental to our profession.
If you are looking for a way to improve your health, a health counselor is one of the most qualified people to spend time with. Their education in nutrition is cutting edge. The only school in the world teaching all the major dietary theories. They’ll help you find the diet and lifestyle choices that work for your unique needs. It’s not a “one size fits all” approach.
But more importantly, a health counselor is trained to understand the dynamics of success.
So, if you have succeeded in many areas of life and you understand the foundation of these success principles, and you are ready to get your health up to the level that you want, check out a health counselor.
Use this when you want to change stubborn patterns of thought and behavior that may be damaging your well-being.
