Big Tools for City Homestead Project 5 9 10

Well, it is may not seem like much to you…

But for me, it is a dream come true!

Yeah, I don’t know why I saved the picture rotated at the proper angle, and then it comes out like this. No time to problem solve, sorry.

I need to haul stuff. Mostly plants, dirt, and compost food. Compost is hungry. It needs to eat. Leaves. Grass clippings.

And smaller tools, I need to haul them too.

Lawnmowers. Chippers. I am renting a commercial chipper that can eat up 6″ diameter branches. I think I will tow it with the Toyota.

toyota 2It is good to have a work truck. It can be shared with the community. Robert Bellows had a behemoth of a Ford that he would share with the community in Boulder, CO. I used it many times for myself and for the Men’s Leadership Alliance.

So now I will get to do the same.

Ahhh… a dream come true… The little things in life.

Dry Beans Vs. Canned Beans, review for Natural Foods Merchandiser

Posted by Seth on April 29, 2010 under Food, Nutrition | Be the First to Comment

I wrote this unedited review for Natural Foods Merchandiser.

The premise is that I am critiquing the response from an employee at a natural foods store, regarding dry beans vs. cooked beans.

Secret Shopper Question:

DS: Hi, could you tell me whether there are any nutritional differences between these canned and dried organic pinto beans?

GT: [Giggle] Honestly, I have no idea.

DS: Do you know why anyone would choose one over the other?

GT: Well, I’ve read that dried and frozen beans are better but I really couldn’t tell you why. When you look at the nutritional data on the back, it shows that these canned beans have more sodium but a lot less dietary fiber and protein. The dried beans seem to have a lot more vitamins and minerals.

Seth’s Response

Three things occur to me as I read this brief encounter.

One, I like the honesty. Don’t make something up to look good.

Two, some training on this would prevent the employee from giving mixed messages. You just said that you don’t have a clue, then you said that you have read some things about it.

Three, what are the facts about this?

On the first point, I have seen too many employees attempt to explain complex dietary theories, like Macrobiotics, to a customer. It’s likely that the employee is into health. It is likely that they want to share it. It is likely that the customer is in a hurry. Therefore, no interested in the whole story. Give the employee a formula for answering these kinds of questions. Here is an example.

Foirmula for answering nutrition questions:

  1. Repeat back the question
  2. Take a moment to consider the question
  3. Reply with an honest and direct response
  4. If you do not know, ask customer if she would like to get a second opinion from another more seasoned employee

To the second point then, you avoid the split between “I have no clue” and “I have read that.”

The facts on this one are:

  1. Well, a significant nutrition difference is the amount of nutrition for your money. A 15 oz. can equals ¾ cup dry beans (1 ½  cups cooked). 4 cups of cooked beans (from dry) for under a $1.00 vs. 15 oz. for $1.50 for canned is average.
  2. The employee hit the nail on the head with sodium. As Dr. Katz recently pointed out, 80% of the sodium Americans eat does not come from the salt shaker. It is added.
  3. Some cans are lined with bisphenol-a. What? It’s a plastic that has been shown to effect hormones.
  4. Soaking beans in water reduces phytic acid more effectively than cooking alone. This would be my priority point, more important than any other. Phytic acid binds minerals. You get less nutrition when you eat the phytic acid. I don’t know how the canned beans were prepared. Probably without soaking at very high heat. They retain phytic acid. It may seem like nutrition geek speak, but as a nutritionist & health coach, that is what I would tell my clients. Especially vegetarians.

A few other non-nutrition related facts to point out:

  1. Less waste, bulk beans are the greener choice
  2. Dried beans taste better home-cooked.
  3. There is more variety to choose from in dried.
  4. Canned beans are great to keep in the pantry for a pinch.

This is relevant to natural foods stores that may want to prepare their employees for excellent responses to a variety of questions.

Lucas Seipp-Williams on Men’s Mastery: Best Year of Your Life

Luke with Happy Clients

In 2006, while attending the Institute for Integrative Nutrition a mentor taught me to make every year my “Best Year Yet.” It’s an exhilarating game that changes everything. You go from living into your probable future (looks a lot like it does now!) to actively creating your life from “anything is possible.”

How to play is simple, but it takes courage and a commitment to living life to the fullest.  There are two simple steps:

#1 Regularly ask and honestly answer the question:
“What do I really want for my life?”

#2 Stop making excuses and get in action, NOW.

Following these two steps, I went from earning $700/month and never imagining I could run my own business to grossing up to $10,000/month with a business that I absolutely love in just a few years.

Tiny Steps or Big Breakthroughs?

At the beginning, before I knew how to ask for and accept high-level support, I was making mini, incremental steps forward in all areas of my life.

In 2009, I created massive transformations and breakthroughs.

The reason for my success?

I put into place Step#3:  Get big time support from expert coaches. Over the years, I’ve had coaches and I’ve done programs, but nothing has come close to the support I got from Seth Braun and his Men’s Mastery Course.

Seth Braun’s coaching is exclusively designed for men like me – young men who are tired of repeating the same patterns, tired of getting results in one area of their lives, only to sacrifice all the others, and willing to do the inner and outer work necessary to create real and lasting breakthroughs.

Anything is Possible for Your Life

Literally, anything is possible for your life through those 3 steps:

#1 Vision the life you want to live.

#2 Stop making excuses and take immediate positive action.

#3 Get massive support to accelerate your growth and side-step unseen obstacles.

Vacation, Adventure, and Travel

When I launched my business, I worked almost every waking moment all year long. In 2009, I took over 2 months of vacation: 1 month of retreats in Costa Rica and 1 month for yoga training in the Bahamas.  Not bad!

And I’ve created a business plan that will make this type of time off possible every year.

Fitness and Sports

I never thought I’d learn to surf, but it’s hard not to if you spend time on the beaches of Costa Rica.  And I now have one of the most thrilling and rejuvenating hobbies to look forward to for the rest of my life.

And it may not sound like a big thing for most of you, but I played in my first adult sports league this past winter.  When I was younger, I sustained major sports injuries. Until recently, that has prevented me from getting back into a league.

In 2009 I got crystal clear about my love of sports and took the necessary steps to rehab my body and get back in the game.

Service

Service is a major part of my life now.  While in Costa Rica, I witnessed a monkey being electrocuted on a power line.  I told the story to some friends, and now we run an annual fundraiser retreat to raise funds and awareness for the protection of the monkeys.

Costa Rica retreats are a favorite part of my year, but a favorite day of my week is Fridays, when I take off work to be of service to veterans who have been homeless and addicted to drugs or alcohol after sustaining Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in foreign wars.

A Legacy of Health and Vitality

I never thought I’d be able to take off a weekday (work day) to do, essentially, whatever I want.  I can do this because each year I take my business and my coaching to the next level – refining whom I work with and the programs I offer. I’ve developed a one-of-a-kind system, the “15-Minute Meal System,” that supports busy people to master healthy, delicious and FAST cooking.  It works well and happy clients are sending more and more people who are ready, willing and able to take their nutrition to the next level with my support.

Family

Being self-employed, I quickly became a work-a-holic.  As you just read, I’ve made huge strides with life balance, but I never seemed to have the rich and fulfilling relationships with my Family – siblings, parents, grandparents, etc.  In

2009 my intention to be a loving presence in my family caused some major breakthroughs for several f

amily members. I even brought my

family together for the very first celebration of my deceased grandfather’s life, many years after his death.  It was an incredibly healing experience for all, and would not have been possible without a commitment to living “My Best Year Yet.”

It Just Gets Better,

If You Want it To

I’m clear that every year of my life will be my “Best Year Yet:” more fun, more fulfillment, more success, more learning, more peace, more of all things good.

And I will continue to get expert support from people who will accelerate the process.

How About Your Life?

So, What do you want for your life?  I mean, really want?  And what would your “Best Year Yet” look like this year?

All you really need to know is that you want to play the game.  And then get support.  If you are a young professional like me, and you’re a man, you’ll want to seriously consider having my coach, mentor and friend Seth Braun in your corner.  It’s made all the difference in the world for me.
